You are then fighting for that kingdom, but you aren’t part of the kingdom. Hello and welcome to the American Civil War Mod: Revived! At first, there was a penalty. A few patches in, they removed it. People wanted to be able to hop around merc'ing for different factions. I don't think it's a bad moveinitially being a merc was about as restrictive as being a vassal (as far as relations penalty for leaving faction), without the benefits.
Build caravans 6. join army/siege (winnable ones) and loot valuable items 7. chop off noble’s head for loot (with the mod) That’s about it. Smithing lets you turn junk weapons into 50k+ twohanders, so that's a nice way to get both a lot of money and amazing weapons.
Contract runs until you end it. If peace breaks out, you can bust bandits and looters and get paid for it until war starts again. If you have workshops in a faction and you are a mercenary for another faction, you will lose that workshop if your faction ends up in a war with the faction in which your workshop is located.
It depends on some factors like if the king of that faction is rich so he can afford to pay you a lot, or if that faction is at war with strong enemies. I just need to get started with my first fief. I remember from back when I first played it, becoming a vassal can get you shafted quite a lot so I thought going for Although there is a bug (or maybe a feature in Taleworlds' eyes) that you can recruit mercenary clans into your kingdom by taking their leader prisoner, and talking to them while they are your prisoner.
